Haven't posted in ages!

First day of classes was this Monday. It 's my senior year but it certainly doesn't feel like it. I have so many things I still need to accomplish before I graduate, such as the daunting thesis I have decided to do for my major, while also trying to study for the GRE. My Library Science school application also has to be submitted in January. Busy busy.

Happy Halloween! I am work right now, and things are dead as usual.

My plans for the evening are minor, Mat and I are going to go to his friend Kelsey's apartment and "pre-game." (Or, more likely, Kelsey will pre-game while Mat and I do not.) Mat is ever so excited for me to meet her because Kelsey is a new friend of his this year, who he met through his atheist group, and she is gay and Mat adores her. I am pleased Mat has found some more interesting friends; for the longest time it's seemed like the only friends he had were boing white dudes like him. Which of course, the majority of his friends still are, but there you go.

My costume is some sort of slutty Snow White (it is this one) and my Mom of all people picked it out for me and sent it. She got it much cheaper than that website lists it as, but still! One would expect one's mom to send some sort of Winnie-the-Pooh costume, a modest onesie or something, not that. Oh well. Mat has been instructed to be Price Charming, of course, which consists of a sword, a crown, a white shirt and black pants.

In other news, not being able to read the oh-so-tempting fanfiction listed on my LJ friends page is torturous. But one cannot read Harry/Draco at work. It is simply not done.

Also, the movie glutton has come and gone already.

Day Seven: My Fancy Is Tickled

Jezebel

This is my favorite blog. I read it everyday. The Jezebels and Jezedudes are all a great set of witty commenters, and sometimes the comments and discussions are better than the articles themselves.

At work again, the pleasantly slow Saturday shift. None of my favorite patrons have come in today, but the Movie Glutton came in already. The Movie Glutton is a grad student, with grad student library privileges and that means unlimited movies with no late fees. She wears a scarf on her head not like a normal person in the hijab style but tied jauntily like a pirate. All of which is unremarkable except for the fact that she checks out approximately 50 movies at a time, and it takes a while to unlock all the cases and desensitize them and make sure all the correct dvds are in said cases and then to scan them all. Maja and I usually tag-team it, but it still takes a while. Also, she does this every Saturday. No one can watch that many movies in a week.

Needless complaining, though. I am in a rather good mood because last night Mathew gave me a very lovely peacock pearl choker. (Pearl necklace choker, which is not the usual definition, but just means sitting right at the base of the neck). It's around the time of our second anniversary, and pearls are my favorite. I'm really quite pleased, and of course told him this. I now have a nice basic white choker, and a secondary black choker, so that's a good start to a pearl collection.

Day Five: A Youtube Clip

Oh, spoiled for choice. I can't pick between these two.

This whole series, simply titled "TNG Edits" is just amazing. I thought this one was a fine example of the form.

There is no proper description I can give for this. It is astounding.

Mint.com

I'm sure everyone's heard about it already, but I love this thing. I, like all children who grew up with early Microsoft Office, am completely entranced by the wonder of pie charts, and having pie charts automatically made based on aggregates of my spending is more fun than I can bear.

Day Three: A Fanfic

The Things that Change by "eutychides" (it's a different fandom author writing under this name)

(I linked you to the last chapter because that has links to all the previous chapters.)

There's not much I can say about this fic that will make you want to read it, actually, because on the surface level it seems like a very strange and unappealing plot. It's Harry/Draco, it's long, and it's mpreg. But it's so much more than that, it's about adult relationships and sex during and after children and how children can surprise you and basically how things can change, as the title says.

Things I would like to see but haven't

  • a feminist essay on Mary Sue fanfiction and what it tells us about the self-perception and fantasies of adolescent women
  • a psycholinguistic essay on glossolalia
  • a study on the language acquisition process of native Esperanto speakers
  • The Big Lebowski

Saturday morning shift at the Library again. This seems like a good time to update regularly; it is consistently not busy. I am wearing my teeny pre-ripped pants today and they apparently are not ripped enough because every time I wear them they seem to rip them a wee bit more.

School is kicking my butt lately, as it is midterms time and I have two tests next week. I think I'm doing better at Chinese, Third Semester is a much more intense program than the level one classes, I have to learn about 30-40 new characters a week, so I haven't been doing well lately. However! I put in some intense study time Thursday night and I think I did better on the weekly test than usual.

I have to turn in a late project for Psycholinguistics, which sucks. I had given it the wrong due date in Google Calender.

I also think I'm getting a blister on my heel, which would suck because it is too cold for flip flops but too hot for clogs.

Saturday shift at the library

I woke up with a sore throat this morning, which is never pleasant. So far my nose has been keeping itself open, but if I starts to plug up I will have to down the Sudafed and hop around like a jittery madman in hopes of avoiding a sinus infection. One time I took Sudafed and Benedryl at the same time under the hypothesis that they would open my nose twice as well and also cancel out each other's side effects (jittery + sleepy = normal?), but indeed they did neither, and just made me act so oddly it alarmed Mat.

Saturday morning shift at the library is dead as can be. It's just Maja and me working it now, Bernice was on this shift too but she traded it for a more lucrative Friday afternoon. Some of the regulars have come in today, Old British Man with Cane and Studious Olive-Skinned Boy. I get off in one hour, whereupon I will scam Mat into cleaning my apartment because he wants to have some people over tonight.

first poast

I keep forgetting to post in this thing, which is just silly, like forgetting to take the plastic wrap off a new toy.

I had better do a little introductory post, for those who might cruise by and wonder who I am. My name is Denise and I am a Junior at the University of Illinois U-C studying Linguistics. I am also minoring in Business and studying Mandarin Chinese. I have a boyfriend named Mathew and I enjoy reading, writing, knitting, as well as other passing fancies. I work in a campus library and want to go to Library Science school after I graduate to be a librarian.

My username is an Oscar Wilde tribute, sort of. I am muggleangel on Livejournal but I have had that name since I was thirteen and it really does show.

Now that the introduction is complete, we can move on to news items.

I finished the rough draft of a little novel this summer, and am now lazily typing and editing it into the all important First Draft. I do have a title I am fond of: The Small Country, and things are coming along as well as can be expected. I estimate the rough draft is about 65,000 words, and it took me about four years to write the whole thing, not due to any intellectual conflict or anything, just because I have never worked on it very consistently, and probably ignored it for a solid year.

But it's something with a solid beginning, a decent middle, and a somewhat slapdash but fixable end, which is more than many aspiring novelists can boast. I've got about 10,000 words typed up so far. I rather regret writing the whole thing longhand now, but it was fun to work on it in classes and pretend to be taking notes.
